Introduction

We were all impacted to some degree by the COVID-19 pandemic. For me it meant a re-connection with the problems of mental well-being and the importance this plays in leading a happy and healthy life. This was a catalyst for me to team-up with 3 other like minded individuals and Co-found the startup uMore, with the mission to help people live better lives through improved awareness, understanding, and management of mental well-being.

We connected around this mission via success during a Techstars Startup Weekend aimed at creating new ideas to help tackle the issues created by the pandemic. My role was CPO and leading the Product Design utilising design thinking methodology to help understand and focus on key aspects of what problem are w looking to solve?, who has this problem?, and what do we want to achieve?

Definition

With a clear problem statement from the discovery phase I worked on ideating concepts, creating solutions, and building prototype to test our hypothesis and assumptions, and get feedback on key concept ideas. This involved facilitating mini design sprints and sketching hacks to develop concepts along with key assumptions (sorted by level of risk). Experiments were then devised along with clickable prototypes to test the concepts and validate assumptions and conducted as 1-2-1 interviews with target users.

Discovery

As this was a new product design it started with customer discovery and the immersion into the problem space to explore, research, and learn. This involved primary and secondary research and qualitative and quantitative data from user and stakeholder interviews, surveys, competitor analysis, task analysis. As a startup it also required looking through a business lens and creating a product vision, lean / business canvas and supporting investor pitching from a product perspective. Outcomes from the discovery phase included; Journey map, personas, user flows, lean canvas.

Wire-frame for each of the key concept areas were created and prototypes built to test with users to get feedback on the concept, user flow, interactions, and usability.

Development

Following several rounds of testing and iterative design, the most promising concepts were taking into final design, with focus on adding visual components, interaction style, error and edge case scenarios, and link to real data. The development was managed in 2-week sprints were the product design was 1 sprint ahead of the engineering team and using combination of Miro (for annotated user flows and interactions), Figma/Adobe XD projects for wireframe components, style guide, and design system, and Zeplin for wireframe definition, element layout, assets, and code.

SaaS Platform

With a successful, highly engaged, and user centric designed patient app for screening, tracking, and self-management attention turned to creating a powerful SaaS platform for doctors, clinicians, and healthcare providers to triage and assess patient needs, remote monitor patient well-being and progress, and manage therapy sessions around specific patient cohorts. This involved gathering requirements from interviews with doctors and observing clinic practices, creating healthcare professional user journeys, JTBD, and testing concept prototypes to assess viability, feasibility, and desirability of features. Resulting in a clear design direction, and feature definition.
